Long Island Greenbelt Trail Hikes to Take on in August 🥾

The Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, an organization dedicated to Long Island’s outdoor spaces and especially trails, has created over 200-miles of hiking paths throughout the Island. As part of the grassroots non-profit organization’s programs, they offer 200 guided hikes each year, perfect for those wanting to try something new, or experience a hike with a group.

Below are some of the most promising August trails, ranging from beginner level to the more advanced. On this list is a hike for everyone wanting to soak in the great outdoors right here on Long Island.

Riverhead Preserve-To-Preserve Hike, Riverhead

Taking place on Friday, August 6, The Riverhead Preserve-to-Preserve Hike will take prospective hikers from The Sarnoff Pine Barrens Preserve to Cranberry Bog Preserve in a four-mile loop fit for beginners and veteran hikers alike. Hiking begins at 9:30 a.m. on the Red Trail at Sarnoff Preserve. The expected length of the hike is four miles of varied terrain

Caumsett Outback, Lloyd Harbor

The Caumsett Outback hike takes hikers through more challenging, hilly side trails in the great Caumsett State Historic Park and Preserve. The hike is on Saturday, August 7, and begins at 9:30 a.m. It is expected to last for six miles. As usual, it is suggested to bring ample water as well as a snack. Rain cancels the hike, so be sure to follow up with the guide through the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference website.

Wantagh Nature Trail Walk, Wantagh

The Wantagh Nature Trail Walk is an easier hike that will take place on Saturday, August 14, allowing people of all skill levels to enjoy the day on generally flat and unobstructed terrain. The hike will bring hikers through Mill Pond and Twin Pond Preserve in Wantagh, areas known for great freshwater and forest views. The four-mile hike begins at 9 a.m. and, as typical, the rain will cancel the hike.

Three Ponds and a Swamp, East Quogue

The Three Ponds and a Swamp hike is one of the more advanced hikes on this list. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, and lasting for 12 fast-paced miles across many different terrains, it is surely not for the faint of heart. Prospective hikers will be taken through Flanders Woods, and will ultimately be brought beach-side for a full three miles of hiking in the sand. Ample water is something the LI Greenbelt Trail Conference recommends for a hike like this.

Bayard Cutting Arboretum Walk, Great River

The Bayard Cutting Arboretum Walk, held on Wednesday, August 25 at 3 p.m. will take hikers through a leisurely trail through lesser-known, scenic gardens right here on Long Island at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. Ponds, as well as the Connetquot River, will also make up the dazzling local scenery. As usual, rain cancels the event. Parking at the arboretum is $8 without an Empire Passport.

Bethpage Ramble, Farmingdale

The Bethpage Ramble is an interesting hike taking place on Sunday, August 29 that will send hikers through Bethpage State Park. It also happens to include part of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt trail. Usual hiking provisions, as well as bug spray, are recommended for this hike. It will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be between five and six miles long, across scenic and varied terrain.
